Introduction

The WMS protocol has been documented comprehensively by the OpenGIS Consortium. Our server being a openGIS WMS compliant product, we should refer to the OpenGIS WMS specification as the major reference documentation.

A short summary of how the WMS protocol works as well as a reference on the Demis implementation specifics will be provided after you have set up the server guided by the instructions in the getting started section on this page.

Getting started

New in version 4 is that it runs "out of the box" with just a few mouse clicks, no need to manually configure things like DCOM and IIS Applications.

Make sure you have a local IIS web server configured to run ASP or ASP.NET applications using the "default" web site, then run the setup program you downloaded from our Downloads section, use the default installation folder, and reboot the server when prompted.

Once the system is rebooted the WMS service will be running in the background with a single map loaded, a sample map identified as SAMPLE.

In the Start menu > Programs > Demis > WMS you will find a few shortcuts that allow you to verify that the WMS server is functional:

Register

You can use this shortcut later, to register your product license.

WMS Service configuration

This opens the WMS control panel applet, which can also be found in Windows Control Panel.

Sample Capabilities XML

This shortcut will open up the XML capabilities file for the SAMPLE map, this XML request is what applications use to find out general information about a particular map, the layers, projection, extent etc. If you are not familiar yet with the WMS specification, just review it's content for now and look into the details later.

Sample Map Image

This shortcut will request a map image in GIF format to verify that the rendering engine is functional using the SAMPLE map.

Installation details

Having verified that the server is basically working, you may wonder what happened exactly during the installation.

In addition to some general runtime libraries which are installed in Windows system directory, The Demis WMS specific files are installed in one folder, the installation folder which is by default:

c:\Program files\common files\demis\demisWMS

You can inspect this folder to see that it contains a Samples sub folder for the sample map data, and a ASP directory which contains some ASP scripts that provide a standard access point for the Demis WMS over Microsoft's IIS web server.

Besides installing these files and registering some configuration information in windows registry, the installer runs a script to create a virtual folder in IIS named WMS which refers to the ASP sub folder in the WMS installation directory.

This will be addressable as http://yourhost/wms/wms.asp and also contains a few xml template files required for proper operation of the WMS web service.
